Join the SV Goodreads Discussion Group!

As some of you may know, Synthetic Voices is not only a podcast, but also the basis of a fun discussion group at monthly WSFA meetings.  But not all listeners (I’m assuming from the download stats) live in the Washington Metro area.  For that reason, I’ve started up a fun little Goodreads forum/group/thing for everybody to participate in (WSFAns are welcome too of course).

So grab yourself a digital chair and join the group.  Feel free to friend me too!

Now keep in mind, this is brand new and I’d rather it become something interesting than anything else.  So let me know your ideas.  So far, I’ve just created a couple feeder threads/folders to guide discussion.  Basically, Top Picks (those first 6 stories) go in one area, other stories go in another, and suggestions can go at the bottom.

Synthetic Voices #11 – October 2012 Top Picks

October was another FANTASTIC month for audio fiction.  There was not only the normal complement of SF and Fantasy, but Horror got a kick in the pants because of Halloween.  After the Top Picks, you’ll get TWO spooky samplings of delicious, dark stories.  Happy Halloween candy hangover everyone!

“When You Find Your True Love…” Wins My 4th Twabble Competition

Not much new to say at this point.  Another win (under the forum username “loyaleagle”)!

If you read my blog semi-regularly, you’ve seen my braggy articles about The Drabblecast’s weekly twabble (100 characters exactly, not counting spaces) competitions.  If not, click the “Publication” tag for previous winning-twabble bragposts.

Here’s the story, for your “visual” enjoyment:

“I could feel her eyes on the back of my neck. Then I turned around and her green eyestalks adjusted, pushing into my chest.”

I titled the twabble “When You Find Your True Love…” because I had the song “Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific stuck in my head.  You know, eyes on the back of your neck…your love across a crowded room…anyway…

Many thanks to Norm over at The Drabblecast for continuously picking my entries.  They are a great way to keep my creative juices flowing without sucking valuable time from grad school.  I encourage everybody to try to craft their own weird twabble over at the appropriate Drabblecast forum thread.

Capclave 2012 Reflections

For those who don’t know, I was at Capclave 2012 this weekend in Gaithersburg, MD.  It’s a speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, and horror) con that is focused on the literary aspects of genre fiction.  As a big fan of short fiction and a sometimes reader of novels, there were a LOT of great panels for me.  I’m also a member of WSFA, the hosting organization, so it was doubly good.

One of the most exciting parts of Capclave this year was my podcast‘s inclusion in the programing.  On Saturday I held a roundtable discussion mirroring the ones we do at normal WSFA meetings.  Unfortunately, it mirrored a little two closely — it was the same people.  I’m glad they came, but it did make me reevaluate how we’re going to do this thing next year (assuming I’m still in a Capclave-adjacent area next year).  We’ll probably make it more of a “what are all these podcasts I hear so much about” info session.

Personally, I went to a lot of great panels and events.  The Edgar Rice Burroughs panel was staffed by some really impressive experts.  The same goes for the “xenobiology” panel, which was very scientifically stimulating!

Synthetic Voices #10 – September 2012 Top Picks

September was an epic month for audio fiction podcasts.  As I sit here writing this blurb, there are 14 great stories I’d love to feature.  Plus lots of bonus stories and info.  Below I’ll choose my favorite 6…though I may sneak a few more in there…
